Mariyappan Thangavelu is an Indian Paralympic high jumper who secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. He secured a gold medal in the 2016 Rio and a silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Games. He has also won the gold and bronze medals at the World Championships. To appreciate his contribution towards sports Indian government awarded him the Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.

- During his school days, Volleyball was his preferred game which he usually played. However, his School Physical Education Instructor inspired him to try high jumping.
- At the age of 14, he played the first event and placed second among a field of able-bodied competitors.
- He achieved this through the encouragement of his schoolmates, classmates, and even some people in the Salem district.
- In 2013, he started his training with his coach Mr Satyanarayana, who supported the Sports Academy of India for differently-abled.
- Mariyappan is one of his six siblings (four brothers and a sister).
- His father reportedly his family early on. So his mother stepped up and supported the family by carrying bricks as a labourer and selling vegetables earning 100 rupees a day.
