Sonya Massey is an African American woman who was shot and killed by a cop in her home. On July 6, 2024, Massey called 911 as she believed that someone had broken into her home. Two deputies (now former), Sean Grayson and his partner, visited her backyard and the immediate vicinity of her home, confirming that there was no evidence of someone being there. The three engaged in a brief conversation about her driver’s license and a car on her driveway. The deputies asked her to check the boiling water on her stove. Following the conversation, the situation escalated, and the authorities drew their guns and shot her three times. Following her murder, the deputy was fired from his job and charged with 3 counts of First-degree murder, Aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct.
